No Wireless Tower @ St Luke’s Grammar School

No Wireless Tower Association (NWTA) was established to bring awareness to the installation of existing and emerging technologies at 224 Headland Road (St Luke’s Grammar School).  Wireless towers in Australia are regulated by Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) who take guidance from The International Commission on Non‐Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Evidence shows that the ARPANSA’s radiation standard and the Guidelines of ICNIRP do not protect adequately against the harmful effects of radiofrequency radiation.  Several high profile Australian legal firms are currently investigating the potential for legal action concerning exposure to radio frequency radiation with more litigation to follow on this issue.

We are the experiment

The rollout of 5G technology, that is a class 2B carcinogen, has never been demonstrated to be safe and there is evidence of risk to the contrary. This violates the principle of precaution that is enshrined in much Australian legislation and many international statements. The World Health Organisation says, ‘The principle states that in the case of serious or irreversible threats to the health of humans or the ecosystem, acknowledged scientific uncertainty should not be used as a reason to postpone preventive measures.’

We are being assaulted

Touching or penetration without informed consent constitutes criminal assault under Australian law*Definition of “assault” (based on the Queensland criminal code as an example):“A person who strikes, touches, or moves, or otherwise applies force of any kind to, the person of another ,either directly or indirectly, without the other person’s consent… Definition of “applies force”: “applies force includes the case of applying heat, light, electrical force, gas, odour, or any other substance or thing whatever if applied in such a degree as to cause injury or personal discomfort.”

Our health is impacted

Thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies show that exposure to levels of radiofrequency radiation that comply with international standards produced harmful effects on the body that could potentially lead to health problems and unpleasant symptoms. They include: • sperm damage • genetic damage • oxidative stress • breaches of blood-brain-barrier • changes to hormones (melatonin). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency radiation as a Class 2B carcinogen, in the same category as lead. • Radiofrequency radiation has been shown to cause structural changes in the brain.

Our asset value is compromised

In 2014, the National Institute for Science, Law and Public Policy (NISLAPP) wrote a report called, “Neighbourhood Cell Tower’s and Antennas – Do They Impact a Property’s Desirability?” In it, it concluded that homebuyers and renters are less interested in properties close to cell towers and antennas. “Ninety-four percent of homebuyers and renters said a nearby cell tower or group of antennas would negatively impact interest in a property or the price they would be willing to pay for it. Documentation of a price drop of up to 20% is found in multiple surveys and published articles.”

The Solution

Remove the tower – this has been done in both the US and UK after cancer clusters in both children and teaching staff arose.
